iPhone – The Ideal Platform for Gaming Apps

Apple’s iPhone had already set its rivals scrambling for duplicating the glassy touch-screen and then for following the footstep of the App Store, its successful mobile application storefront. And now it is the video game industry that has taken up forefront and drawn all the attention. It seems that playing games is one the most popular things that users do on their iPhones. Irrespective of age group, iPhone users around the world use the device to play games in order to enjoy a break from their daily hectic schedules.

According to mobile analytics, out of 50,000 apps available in the App Store for the iPhone and iPod Touch, nearly 20% of the programs belong to the Games category. It is undoubtedly one of the most sought after iPhone application category that received most number of downloads from all over the world. As per few reviews published on iPhone app review sites, more than half of the billion applications download from the App Store belong to the games category.

The App Store is flooded with wide range of fascinating gaming apps – most of which are free or cost as little as 99 cents and can be downloaded from the store over wireless connection. This is probably one of the major reasons behind the popularity of games among iPhone users. Moreover, the high-end features of the device have taken gaming experience to a whole new level.

Market analysts further believes that the idea of gaming has exposed iPhone to whole new group of consumers. People, who are known as casual gamers are the main target of video gaming industry for growth and overall popularity. So, it is quite obvious that video game developers are now focusing on developing gaming apps for the iPhone platform.

Greg Joswiak, the marketing head of iPhone and iPod said, “This is the future of gaming”. Apple has made huge ads for promoting iPhone gaming, which includes television commercials as well. Even at the launch of the iPhone 3G S early June, the company showcased a long video featuring testimonials from game developers. Apple further welcomed different companies on stage to demonstrate their games that made use of Apple’s latest OS software upgrade.

However, the popularity of iPhone games among users - which is some 79% of total iPhone owners, has downloaded games in comparison with only 31% of other smartphone users - has lead game publishers flock to get their games on the iPhone platform.
