The iPhone is Finally Ready to Fly to China

Jeffrey Fidacaro, the Susquehanna Financial Group analyst argued over the deal on the same day. He said that the deal would eventually translate into another 2 million sales of the iPhone if Apple gets successful in grabbing 3% of the 65 million of China Unicom’s postpaid subscriber base to 70 million.

The deal, however, is quite unusual – nothing similar to the ones that Apple had signed so far. According to the deal, China Unicom, instead of sharing its revenue with the Cupertino, a California base company will buy the handsets directly from Apple. The deal further declares that the iPhones sold by China Unicom will not have the capability of Wi-Fi, which means the people of China will not have the benefit of Wi-Fi connection on their iPhones.

However, the deal - without any such clause could have been a huge opportunity for the iPhone developer, who put in all their efforts to create unique applications for the samrtphone platform, which they wish to cater to every user across the world. Colin Smith, the vice president and co-founder of Freeverse, one of the finest mobile phone game developers said: "China was definitely the big one,"-and it was indeed. AT&T, in a letter to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) clearly acknowledged that the company has made an agreement with Apple to block VoIP applications from using the cellular networks provided by them. However, in the agreement it was also said that the VoIP apps, which use Wi-Fi would be taken under consideration, i.e. these apps would not be blocked. Well, this could mean that iPhone developers will now have limited scope for developing more interactive apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch platform. Here is an overall gist of the agreement between AT&T and Apple.

In the agreement it was clearly stated that Apple would not take any affirmative step to enable an iPhone to use the wireless service of AT&T, which includes 2G, 3G and Wi-Fi for making VoIP calls without the prior consent of the company (AT&T). However, AT&T and Apple also agreed that if any third-party iPhone app developer enables a device in order to make VoIP calls using the wireless service of AT&T, then Apple would have no objection in taking serious action against that third-party developer.

The concurrence of the party on this provision was distinctly important considering the risks they assumed this would bring in marketing the iPhone. The willingness of the party and their ability to assume the risk involved in investing for the iPhone and its pricing strategy were quite predicated in some significant parts based on the assumptions made about the monthly service revenue generated by iPhone users.

Both the parties would require assurance that the revenue that comes from AT&T voice plans available to the customers of iPhone would not be reduced due to the activation of the iPhone’s VoIP calling functionalities. Federal Communications Commission Seeks Explanation from Apple and AT&T for Rejecting Google Voice Apps

Apple’s rejection of the Google Voice Application has become one of the hottest news across the mobile phone industry. There has been a lot of speculation regarding the reason behind this huge step Apple has taken to prevent applications getting duplicated. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) took this issue quite seriously and launched an investigation on Friday to dig deep into the matter. FCC has been questioning Apple Inc. (AAPL) and AT&T Inc (T) regarding their rejection of Google Voice Application and removal of similar third-party applications from the App Store. However, this news has certainly put iPhone developer into deep thought.

Late on Friday, FCC sent letters to all the three companies asking them for explanation. The letter further seeks information whether or how AT&T was consulted in Apple’s decision of the rejection or removal of apps from the App Store. For the convenience of their investigation, FCC asked Apple to describe the conversation the company had with its partner (AT&T) while making decisions. In the letter the commission said:

“Why did Apple reject the Google Voice application for iPhone and remove related third-party applications from its App Store?… Did Apple act alone, or in consultation with AT&T, in deciding to reject the Google Voice application and related applications? If the latter, please describe the communications between Apple and AT&T in connection with the decision to reject Google Voice. Are there any contractual conditions or non-contractual understandings with AT&T that affected Apple’s decision in this matter?…Does AT&T have any role in the approval of iPhone applications generally (or in certain cases)? If so, under what circumstances, and what role does it play? What roles are specified in the contractual provisions between Apple and AT&T (or any non-contractual understandings) regarding the consideration of particular iPhone applications?”

FCC did not leave the matter to that but further asked about other VOIP applications that are approved by the company for iPhone and the ones that have been rejected in general. The commission also enquired about the standards that Apple has set for approving or rejecting apps and its approval process.

However, while FCC is busy investigating the issue, an AT&T spokesperson supported his company’s stand and said that they do not have any role in making decisions related to iPhone application approval or disapproval – it is Apple and Apple alone. In his comment, he said - “We have received the letter and will of course respond to it. AT&T does not manage or approve applications for the app store,”

Whether the rumor of the iPhone getting overheated is true or not is not yet confirmed, users and iPhone app developers are quite worried about it. Apple, as always is not ready to take any chances. The company has taken this issue so seriously that it has revealed the presence of a temperature warning screen for both iPhone 3G as well as iPhone 3GS. The issue came up when few people reported that their iPhone 3SG models are getting heated even if used for a little while. Not only that, even iPhone 3G users, who upgraded their phones with the new OS 3.0 said that they are too experiencing the same problem.

It is true that a few iPhone models are getting affected by overheating in such an extent that their white cases are turning pink or even brown in places. Apple says, in these situations the device might act strangely – it may stop charging, the display might dim, users may experience poor cellular signals and the warning screen may appear on the left side of the screen. Apple’s Rejection of “Me So Holy” App Creates a Mix Reaction

According to the company the “Me So Holy” app contains some “objectionable” content, which violates the Section 3.3.12 of the SDK Agreement that states:

“Applications must not contain any obscene, pornographic, offensive or defamatory content or materials of any kind (text, graphics, images, photographs, etc.), or other content or materials that in Apple’s reasonable judgment may be found objectionable by iPhone or iPod touch users.”

Downgrading an iPhone App: Something We Never Thought Before

In the world of constant upgrades, updates and improvements, it's a race to stay ahead of the curve. But how about downgrading? Have you ever wondered if it were possible to download an older version of an app - for example, if you're not lucky or loaded enough to have the latest iPhone model, or - not that we are supporting such behavior! - if you have a jail broken or unlocked model? Well, none of the iPhone developer or user has ever spoken about this issue so far.

To find out a way, I did a little bit of experiment with the latest 1.0.3 version of the Skype app on my iPhone and tried to downgrade it to the older 1.0.2 version. It definitely took me sometime to come up with a concrete result – but finally got a breakthrough. Here is what you need to do to downgrade Skype 1.0.3 to 1.0.2 on your Mac machine:
First login to the iTunes Store with the account you used for downloading Skype.

After upgrading one of the existing apps in your iPhone when you sync the device with iTunes, it automatically sync the updated version to your computer and at the same time deletes the older version and moves it to the trash. So, to find the older version, go to the Trash folder and copy the Skype.ipa file and copy it to a new location.

3. After copying the older version, delete the updated version from the device. Tap and hold the icon on your iPhone screen until it jiggles. Then click on x and delete.

4. Next, go to your Mac machine → Music/ iTunes/ Mobile Applications → find the Skype 1.ipa file, the latest version and move the file to the Trash folder.

5. Empty the Trash folder.

6. After that copy the older version from where you saved it and move it to Music/ iTunes/ Mobile Applications.

7. By double clicking the Skype.ipa, you will get a message saying “A newer version of the application “Skype” is already in your iTunes library. Are you sure you want to replace it with the one you are moving.”

8. Click on Replace.

9. With the iPhone still connected to your Mac machine select your iPhone from under the “Devices” option → click on the application tab → find whether Skype has a check mark at the side of it → click on Apply.

10. Finally, you will find that the older version of Skype has been installed on your iPhone.

However, you must also understand that this technique doesn’t always work perfectly. But, it is definitely the best way I could find or think of. If it doesn’t work for your app, don’t get upset – simply go to the iTunes App Store and download the latest version of the app once again.

AT&T Reconsiders their Terms of Services: A Relief for iPhone Developers

Early this month, AT&T had announced to prohibit video streaming, file sharing or data tethering to personal computers or other devices. AT&T’s wireless terms of services created a lot of agitation among iPhone users, as it would seemingly restrict the usage of few applications that AT&T customers already enjoy. Later, due to the outcry of millions of people over the matter, the company decided on reconsidering their terms of services and explained that the changes that they made earlier were “in error”.

Surprising everybody, AT&T has made some changes in their TOS (Terms of Services) within the past few hours. According to the new rules the company will ban the place shifting activities that used the wireless network to stream data from Slingbox or any other similar devices to personal computers. The term states:

“While most common uses for Intranet browsing, e-mail, and Intranet access are permitted by your data plan, there are certain uses that cause extreme network capacity issues and interference with the network and are therefore prohibited. Examples of prohibited uses include, without limitation...downloading movies using P2P file sharing services, redirecting television signals for viewing on Personal Computers, Web broadcasting, and/or for the operation of servers, telemetry devices....”

By this AT&T clearly states that the company does not want their wireless network to get overwhelmed with heavy video use, which maybe logical to certain extent. But, it is quite surprising why the company is banging on such restriction when it is the ideal time for AT&T to grow. On the other hand, there is a rumor of Apple releasing a next generation iPhone with video capabilities sometime this summer, for which AT&T is performing a network upgrade in order to double the speed of download to 7Mbps and higher in the future.

However, for iPhone developer it is a relief that the new AT&T TOS does not fully prohibit video streaming, which would mean that apps like SlingPlayer can still be accessed from iPhones.
